Chapter Fifteen

On Sunday morning, Batya’s emotions were all over the place, which meant she needed help.

An expert.

And she knew just the person to ask.

Just three years before, Anna had proclaimed her history with Jacob was radioactive baggage. Now she was six months away from marrying him. If anybody could help her figure out how she wanted to handle things with Abe, it was Anna.

Thankfully for her, Anna was in Hollowville with Jacob, and agreed to meet her at the Caf and Nosh.

She left earlier than usual, found a spot by Tante Shelly’s apartment, and meandered down the street, resolving to stop by and see her aunt before heading back to Rivertown.

The cold had seemingly ushered the early stirrings of Hanukkah into Hollowville. But the most important things would never change. The smell of the Caf and Nosh as she walked inside, the feeling she got from walking into a place that knew her as well as she knew it.

And the embrace of a friend who’d seen her through some interesting times. Instead of waiting for her to approach, Anna crossed the threshold and put her arms around her.

“I missed you,” Batya said. “I missed this.”

“Me too,” her friend said.

But after a bit, Anna stepped back. “So, what’s up?”

“I need advice,” she said as Anna ushered her through the entrance, past the front desk, following Chana’s finger to an open table.

“Talk to me. What’s going on? I’ve honestly had enough looking at real estate.”

“Real estate?” Adult relationships apparently required discussions on real estate. Houses, apartments, condos. Especially if this was an adult relationship like the one Anna was in.

“Yeah,” Anna said as they sat down. “Something small, I told him. Small. So, we’re looking at houses because my parents aren’t getting younger, and at some point he thinks we’re going to need something here. And, apparently, because he’s right, that sometime is now.”

“So,” Chana interjected as she came over to the table, dropping off menus as if they needed them. “Are you okay?”

The thing still hanging over her from last class. Not the missing instructor, but the panic attack she’d had all the way through the beginning of it. She hadn’t expected Chana to mention it. “Fine,” she said. “Thank you. Really.”

Chana nodded, though Batya could still see the skepticism in the older woman’s eyes. “You ready to order?”

Grateful for the break, Batya threw herself into ordering, with coffee and matzah brei and all of the best breakfast foods.

And as Chana headed off to the kitchen, Anna raised an eyebrow.

“You’re doing okay though?”

Batya nodded. “With that, yeah. You were sweet on Thursday.”

“I’m your friend,” Anna replied. “This is how things go. When you call me and tell me you’re upset, and I just happen to be on my way to Hollowville, I end up at your place instead.”

“That’s not what I meant, but thank you. Always. But I have a question for you.”

Anna nodded. “Okay.”

“How do you trust your feelings?”

Anna looked up at her. “What do you mean exactly?”

“Well, how do
